My Cold Process Soap Making Workshop is now available online. Learn to make soap from scratch with me, from anywhere in the world (Eastern Standard Time in Australia). Kits will only be sent to Australian residents.
Making soap from scratch is a very satisfying activity on many levels. It is a wonderful skill to have, and once you are able to make your own nourishing, moisturising soaps, you won’t want to go back to mass-produced “soap” again, with its artificial ingredients and drying detergents.
Much like cooking, soap making uses some ingredients and equipment you might already have in your kitchen. However, since the authentic process of soap making involves the use of lye (also known as caustic soda), extra care must be taken. For this reason, all participants must be aged 16 and above, unless supervised by a responsible adult.
Just like my in-person workshop, you will learn the essentials of cold process soap making using natural vegetable oils and pure plant essential oils. Some of the topics we will cover include:
- Safe handling of ingredients
- Equipment needed
- Different types of moulds
- What oils are commonly used in soap making and why
- Options for fragrance, exfoliants and colourings
- Some basic design techniques
- How to formulate your own recipes
Upon completion of this workshop you should have the confidence to make more soap at home, experimenting with different ingredients, fragrances, exfoliants and colours. Soap making can be very addictive, with endless possibilities for creativity!
What is included
A kit will be sent to you in advance of the workshop you have booked. It contains ingredients needed for the online workshop (choose your essential oil blend from the drop-down box), some bits and pieces to jazz up your soap if you wish, course notes and some extra recipes to try another time.
Please note that a mould is not included. You will be given some simple options that are easily sourced, or you can add a box mould ($25) to your order.
What you need to source yourself
You will need a stick blender, a kitchen scale, thermometer, safety goggles and other minor items that will be advised after booking (you're welcome to ask in advance).
The only ingredients you'll need to supply are caustic soda (as it is not allowed to be shipped) and olive oil.
How does it work?
Before the workshop: We will send out your kit, as well as a list of what you need to gather before the class. It is not necessary to read the class notes in advance. No soap making experience is necessary.
During the workshop: I will demonstrate how to make a batch of soap, then you will make your own batch of soap under my watchful eye. There will be time for questions, and I'll guide you through the whole process including cutting and curing your soap.
The workshop is live and interactive via videolink. Duration is approximately 2- 2.5 hours.

Through these workshops I could connect with some lovely people, learn while being creative and now I feel I have got what I need to start my own soap and candle making journey.
